Patriotism

PATRIOTISM
Hmmmmm....., Patriotism, a great topic to reflect on. While thinking of what to write, babe particular event of the previous week kept on ringing in my head and the social media trend that followed it. Yes! It is exactly what you are thinking, the #Iamnotalazyyouth trend. What brought about this?, people said that our president was not being patriotic enough by embarrassing  Nigeria youths in the presence of 58 Commonwealth countries' representatives and almost all media houses in the whole world. Nigerians (including me) took to Twitter, Facebook and even WhatsApp to start a trend and also correct the president. I am not pushing blames on anyone as I am not meant to show political support to a particular party over another but I hope you are getting a clear view of what Patriotism really meansAccording to DUTA, one of my favorite social media exploits, Patriotism is defined as the love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it. It is the ideology of attachment to one's homeland including ethnic, cultural, political or historical aspects. It's hyper-form is termed as jingoism or chauvinism. This reminds me of a Korean movie I once watched titled "Bridal Mask" (NOT AN ADVERT!!!!!). The movie centers on the colonization of Korea (there are a few Nigerian movies like that too and I'm sure you must have seen some of them) those that betrayed it and those that fought for it(patriots) losing their livese in the process. I can relate this to some Nigerian patriots like Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikwe, Tafawa Balewa and a few others. They fought for the independence of this country and even Nelson and Winnie Mandela of South Africa. My greatest example is that of Christ who laid down his life for the church and the world as a whole for the salvation of souls. Dear reader, permit me to say we have no patriots in Nigeria today, an average American before going to bed says "God bless America" but even if you beg an average Nigerian to say it, his reply is "who Nigeria epp" we claim we have not gained form Nigeria so why should Nigeria gain from us, some people even go to the extent of cursing Nigeria. Dear readers, let us be patriotic the positive way and not the opposite, if only the number of Nigerians that participated in the #Iamnotalazyyouth trend could say God bless Nigeria atleast once a day, Nigeria would be far better off today, please tell a friend to tell a friend to remind a friend to say everyday that God Bless Nigeria.
GOD BLESS NIGERIA
